The International
Federation of Ingrid Betancourt Committees is alarmed to hear that
President Uribe has terminated unilaterally mediation efforts of
President Chavez with regard to hostages in
Colombia
.
In association with Yolanda Pulecio, Ingrid ‘s mother and the
entire family, we wish to state we have total confidence in
President Chavez, who has made significant progress leading us to hope
that finally Ingrid Betancourt and her fellow hostages will be freed.
There
is no acceptable alternative to mediation efforts and we demand that
President Uribe reconsider his decision, thereby showing that it is he
and not his army generals who rule the country.
We
are appealing urgently to President Sarkozy to make representations to
President Uribe. We ask the International Community to support
President Sarkozy in his demand to return to mediation and ask elected
representatives, who support us, to convey this to the Colombian
government through its embassies.
